The first thing you want to do when starting a home remodeling project is to create a budget. By finding out what your top priorities are, how much you are looking to spend and what you want to get out of the project, you will end up with a great result. Be sure and put a few thousand dollars in a miscellaneous category in your budget. There are always unforeseen issues that come up in a remodel. Also be aware that you will want to do some "add ons" as the remodel progresses.
Do your research and shopping before you hire a contractor.. You must be informed of costs of everything. Nothing is worse than to enter into a project with absolutely no knowledge of the subject: you asking for trouble. Now one can always call a few contractors out and do what is called "pick their brains". The problem here is some a great sales people and you might end up signing with them when you do not know what you are doing.
You must pick a contractor that you can trust. Ask friends and acquaintances for references. Remember this contractor is going to be in picking subcontractors and the materials that you need, but this does not mean that you will leave everything to the contractor.
Check out all available outlets for appliance, go to a major marble, granite yard for your counter tops( if you have a relatively small areas, look for scrape marble leftover form a big job. Or will you be just as happy with synthetic materials. A prime example of an outlet that has unbelievable pricing is the Sears regional outlets. A dent in the side of a drop in stove can save you hundreds of dollars. Recently I purchased a $800 drop in all electric ceramic top stove with all the bells and whistles for $369 and a top of the line above range microwave with a vented exhaust system for $250. (was $600) and delivery was free! Almost half of costs. There is no reason why you cannot purchase your appliances before hiring a contractor. The saving can be great and you are in control of your money. the fact is most contractors have a favorite local place to purchase items and for convenience and time, use the same place again again, putting the cost and do not forget the internet for research and comparison shopping.:
The bottom line is: The more you get involved in the decisions pertinent to your remodel the less problems you will have and the happier and satisfied you will be when the remodel is complete.
