New concept in living was the vision of a young man named Del Webb. Planned communities that not only cater to the retiree, but the neighborhoods would be restricted to that age . Sun City started construction in the 1960s as a community. Little has changed for the community in the last 40 years. However, as more retired to the area, Del Webb began construction on other retirement commuites as the need arrived.
- 1960s-Sun City-The population was 38,309,
- 1970s Sun City West -Before the community was constructed, most of the area was of farmland mainly growing cotton. It was constructed because of the popularity of Sun City, which had outgrown its boundaries. Sun City West was completely built out in 1998 and a sister city, Sun City Grand, to the west of Grand Avenue was started.
- 1990s Sun City Grand -Tens of thousands of retirees moved to the city in the 1990s and early
- 2000s to live in Sun City Grand. Surprise is about five miles northwest of Del Webb's original Sun City development.
- And in the 2000s Sun City Festival and Sun City Anthem
Once the success of the success of the Arizona Sun Cities, Del Webb has built retirement
communities across the nation, especially in areas such as Florida, Nevada, and California.
