I am not trying to confuse you with trivial academic information. I am an Instructor of law as well and as an educator I believe in having a well informed consumer base, because that will ensure that after all is said and done, all parties involved are happy with the transaction. That being said....
Certain things go well together; bacon and eggs, movies and popcorn, fast food and banks, supermarkets and cell phone stores. Pavlov (as we all know) did extensive research on conditioning and found that after a certain point of repetitive assimilative comparison, an image is forever thereafter programmed into the individuals mind as an inseparable image. Just like Pavlov’s pigeon (after months of conditioning) got hungry and went to the feeder when the light flashed, when the average person thinks of movies, popcorn is inevitably part of that image. That is no coincidence. That is a product of years of commercial conditioning and ground breaking commercial psychology. The ground work has been laid out. All the smart business has to do, is take advantage of said findings.
The consumer’s mindset (as we know) is very important and if the right product isn’t in the right place at the right time, its chances of being purchased decrease tremendously.
Companies have to be aware of this (and the good ones are). The ideal scenario is for business “A” to establish itself next to establishment “B” with the following in mind. Establishment “B” must have a customer base that is coherent with the products/services offered by “A,” (ergo: a tire shop next to a gas station). Establishment “B” and “A” should compliment each other and although they do not have to share an identical customer base, there are extreme benefits to setting up shop next to an establishment offering products/services which are cohesive and a compliment to those of your establishment. Case in point: there is a commercial strip housing a KFC and a Bank of America and one additional vacant lot. What business would benefit the most from setting up their establishment in said spot? Another food venue would probably be drowned out by KFC, while another financial institution may ironically thrive. When one goes into a bank area what does their mind automatically shift to? The answer is, “financial concerns, grocery shopping or a snack item.” The thoughts of whom you owe, who owes you along with what is lacking in your house and how nice a breakfast biscuit would be right then, start racing through your mind. That is why you will see a commercial complex housing a SunTrust, A Kroger, A Taco Bell and a McDonalds. Now the SunTrust, Kroger and Taco Bell make sense together, but what logic does it have to place two fast food establishments, literally feet away from each other? It makes perfect sense. When that person comes out of the bank, they will more than likely purchase something at Kroger, and then proceed to get a snack for the ride back home or to work. So if any of the food establishments would have not rented or purchased space in the lot simply because there was direct competition in the lot, some serious money would have been lost. Consumers like variety. That is one of the reasons why where ever you see a Lowes rest assured that you will find a Home Depot close by.
