The Real Estate Blog is quickly becoming recognized as a viable marketing method. Blogging will be the norm for a number of reasons already mentioned in the very new future. In fact, many online portals that offer article type content are blogging like about.com.

A good article on blogging.
I keep reading blogging is the way to market in the future. However all I can find are articles on what blogging is, and how to set it up. What nobody is writing about is what kind of content should I be putting in the blog that will drive potential home buyers or sellers to do business with me. When all is said and done, an agent gets paid on selling houses. If blogging doesn't help sell more houses, than it's a waste of time and resources. I kind of feel like it's 1994 again and I know I need a website, I just don't know why.
Thanks,

Two reasons to blog:
1. Authority of your subject. Ever wonder why most people publish books? Instant credibility and expertise.
2. Search engines love blogs.
3. You are creating community thru a personal conversation that a traditional website will not do.
What to put on your blog:
1. Home owner tips
2. Market Data
3. Sub market Data-HOA minutes, local Zoning issues, neighborhood info, new listings
This is a start. It is a ton of work, but well worth it once you have people coming into your site and you capturing their personal information.

Would blogging really help to make a real estate site more popular?
I would prefer to think that both offline & online SEO marketing tools must be implemented to make the site a success.
Not forgetting, the "real content" within the site is ultimately the most important for the web viewer or else it simply becomes a click-and-exit process.
Somehow, search engines should pay more attention to the visitors' stay-in-site time as it actually determines the relevancy of keywords-linking to actual site content - if viewer stays longer to browse around, then the site must definitely be providing pretty relevant information based on his / her original search terms.
Real estate is afterall a very heterogeneous product and most viewers, albeit search the net for information, would probably still very much prefer the age-old method of direct referrals from friends and relatives, or otherwise standard newspaper classifieds.
In this instance, blogging might just be a "fad" per say and will not last once the engines one day decide to eliminate blog sites from their search results (as a result of too much nonsensical information and irrelevant marketing).

Congratulations on a well written and informative site. I started a real estate blog a couple of weeks ago and I am astounded at the number of hits generated by the search engines, especially Google. If you have a moment, visit my blog at http://therealtygram.typepad.com and let me know what you think. Keep up the good work!
