Is Your Website Here Today, Gone Tommorrow?
I ask you, if your website disappeared, would your business disappear with it?
Last night, my friend shared with me one of the most frightful scenarios that I have ever witnessed on the Internet.
The website that had up until two nights ago put food on his families table all of a sudden was failing to produce leads. With further investigation, my sad friend found that all traffic was gone. It was a matter of seconds to discover this golden goose had become a nightmare.
The site was deindexed from Google, Yahoo, MSN and even Ask.
Three years of diligence. Optimizing, Link Exchanging, Reading ,Posting, Studying. All for naught.
Within a matter of minutes his livelihood, his families sustenance was gone.
Can it happen to you? Yes. It has to me. And it hurt.
What's Supp?
So I ask you. Do you have a back up plan?
Are you working to get your "Supp' pages out of the Google supplemental index?
Is your site only running on a couple cylinders? Just a few pages are bringing you traffic? Because if you have pages in the "supps", they are more than likely non performing traffic pages.
Gotcha YA!
Most agents and agencies I come across do a very poor job of incubating the leads that they capture, if they capture many at all. Taking a passive approach is a mistake, as your positions are not yours. They are Google's.
And it can happen to anyone. Just recently a major 2.0 portal run by one of the webs most revered thought leaders was downgraded (some would call penalized) massively by the Google gods. Ironically, this person is the "inventor" of the whole permission marketing idea. He has consulted Google. If they will do it to him, they can do it to anyone.
Free Traffic?
To count on engines as your single engine for business is a recipe for disaster. This approach always is short sighted as it depends heavily on traffic and is dependent on an entity that does not want you or I to get free traffic (The engines are publicly traded companies and are beholden to their stockholders to make a profit). That is fine, however you are beholden to make your business a profit too. The real point is that if you are not working and building a list (in other words, marketing off web as well as on), then you are risking your livelihood.
