Yahoo Research has found that just 20,000 people are responsible for tweeting half of all tweets on Twitter. That is less than one percent. The sample size was 260,000. Nevertheless, this is social media.
Right now stop what you are doing and go count how many of your "friend" on any social network has posted anything. Now go and see when they actually interacted.
The numbers are far less than the hype would indicate. (this story reminds me of the story of the Mall employee part time Realtor who was brought onto speak at NAR about the gold mine called Twitter. Check credentials before buying into the Koolaid)
Is this reason to not socialize? Let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater. HOWEVER......
......as I had indicated yesterday, the social media is much more interesting to me as a traffic source in total, working syngergistically with each other. Thats why placing all your bets on Facebook or Twitter is a losers game. There is a reason Facebook jumped on the Open Graph. They had to in order to survive. Much like Google had to do Adwords and Android. There is no money in free.
As I mentioned, the SEO implications are huge. However, when you piece the traffic from all the various networks together, it is substantial. Just hanging on Twitter all day however is not a success path for most.
Based on this classification, we find a striking concentration of attention on Twitter---roughly 50% of tweets consumed are generated by just 20K elite users---where the media produces the most information, but celebrities are the most followed. We also find significant homophily within categories: celebrities listen to celebrities, while bloggers listen to bloggers etc; however, bloggers in general rebroadcast more information than the other categories. Next we re-examine the classical ``two-step flow'' theory of communications, finding considerable support for it on Twitter, but also some interesting differences. The balance is engagement. If you do not engage on the social nets you are simply ignored. So being able to scale your posts with tools like Ping.fm, or Hootsuite are terrific time savers. You need to schedule engagement time so that you are not posting to digital air.
